Ultra-marathons and trail-running

I signed up to my first ever ultra-marathon - an 80km race - just 5 days before it started. Some of the army guys I'd just been cross-country ski racing with were doing it, and I figured if I could beat them on snow, I could beat them on the trails too. It was four times further than I'd ever run before, but I read some blogs, bought some kit, and managed to finish in the top 40%. Even though it was winter in the UK and rained all day, I had the best time, and my life as an endurance athlete began.
So far, my favourite race has been the 250 km World Championships, when we raced across Slovenia and I finished 3rd. I’ve also loved multi-day ultra-marathons in the Azores and Wales, finishing second in both.
I've now raced 10 single-day ultra-marathons, including winning a 50 km in the UK, three third, two fourth, and two fifth place finishes. UTMB Whistler in Canada was one of the most beautiful races I've ever done - I smiled for 11 hours straight.
I've crewed UTMB twice with some great friends, and am desperate for fourth time luck in the ballot next year for the legendary 170 km race. In 2024, only 13% of starting slots were given to women, and only 2.5% of finishers were female, statistics I'm passionate about changing!
On the road, I earned a Blue racing for Oxford University at the London Marathon and qualified for Boston, whilst half marathons are always a fun way to introduce friends to the sport.
Perhaps my most iconic race was as Captain Kirk. I was all ready to set 'The Guinness World Record for the Fastest Marathon Dressed as a Sailor'...until lockdown hit and races were cancelled. Undeterred, I powered on, running the marathon in my garden, but with a special twist. 26 friends each set me a special challenge for 'their' mile, turning it into a memorable & sociable event during isolation. Filming it all live on Instagram was much more exhausting than the running itself!
Trail running enables you to explore some of the most amazing places - from the Appalachian Trail in the US, to with the Maasai Mara in Kenya, and running up mountains to see sunrises all over the world.
I love hosting trail running and training camps to share my passion with others, or even just morning group runs when I'm invited to speak at conferences, as a fun way to connect with fellow climate-tech enthusiasts before the day's events.
