Pacific Crest Trail - PCT- 2025

The Pacific Crest Trail runs along the entire length of the USA - from Mexico to Canada, through California, Oregon, and Washington - and it had been a dream of mine to hike it since we first visited Yosemite and Lake Tahoe when I was 8 years old.

In summer 2025 I succesfully thru-hiked 4,700 km along the whole PCT, trekking over 53 km every day for 90 days straight, supported by The North Face and following a competition run by Outside Magazine.

This adventure, like life, is all about the journey - and journeys are about the people you meet and the person you become along the way. It's the friends and memories you make in the process that make it so special.

🇺🇸 Day 90 - 16km - 19.08.25 ⛰️ I’d nailed pitching my tent to have a view of the sunrise, and had a final drone from my sleeping bag over breakfast. It was the perfect morning to finish the trip - the weather was incredible, the views were amazing, and the trail was quiet, so it was a lovely bimble up, along, and over Foggy, Windy, Buffalo passes to the extraction point at Harts Pass. So that means I hiked the 813km of the Washington PCT in 888km and 3 ice cream. And with that I hiked the whole 4265km long PCT in 4618km total and 35 ice cream. I was sad it was over and mostly just so grateful for everything I’d experienced - kind and generous people, beautiful views and so many great memories. I managed to get a ride pretty quickly down to Mazama, and spent a few hours in the sun at the bakery there before heading over to the campground and finding some friends. It felt very weird suddenly not having to do anything, but we were all so exhausted that just lounging around was a fab way to chill and start decompressing.

🇺🇸 Day 89 - 60km - 18.08.25 ⛰️ Today was the day I finally made it to Canada! It was a short hill up Rock Pass and another up Woody Pass, before an amazing viewpoint over the North Cascades and Hopkins Lake. After such a long journey, hitting the border didn’t feel real until I finally rounded the last corner and reached the Northern Terminus itself, and it was very cool to see the monument, signs for Canada, and the gap in the trees that marked the divide. I carried on a short way to go to the loo illegally in Canada, and then took some photos before turning around and heading back up the mountain with Chuck on our victory lap. Not being allowed to cross the border anymore means you have to backtrack 50k to an extraction point in the US, which is sort of annoying but it’s such a beautiful section of the trail and it was fun to cross paths with people headed the other way for some high-fives. I droned at the very top of the big climb, and then carried on for the rest of the day, finding an amazing ridgeline to camp on for my final night on trail.

🇺🇸 Day 88 - 58km - 17.08.25 ⛰️ It was downhill and in the forest until West Fork Methow Creek where we stopped for water and to de-layer as it warmed up. From there today was a really great day for views and there were so many passes - many which weren’t entirely obvious, and the trail was basically on amazing ridges and traverses all day. We headed up past Glacier Pass and I droned at the saddle by Grasshopper Peak as the views either side into both valleys were amazing. We stopped for lunch and to dry our tents at Harts Pass and found a cooler of fruit which we chose to assume was trail magic rather than someone’s lunch. It would have been irresponsible to leave food out in bear country so we ate most of it, but left some just in case. We stopped for another break at Jim Pass, and then sort of unexpectedly there was a beaut sunset over the surrounding ridgelines as I pulled in to camp at a stream just after Holman Pass.

🇺🇸 Day 87 - 51km - 16.08.25 ⛰️ It was so satisfying to hear the rain pour down outside during the night from the comfort and warmth of my bed. We had a chilled start to the morning as the shuttle wasn’t until 8am, and it was so exciting that it was going to stop at the bakery on the way back to the trailhead. I had the honey nutty syrupy version of the cinnamon bun I’d had yesterday, which was actually somehow even better. The trail was all uphill for the first 40km, in total gaining 1600m net elevation - first following the Stehekin River and then Bridge Creek to Rainy Pass. There I found some trail magic bush muffin bars and sodas, which was much needed before I carryed on up to Cutthroat Pass. I droned at the top to try and get the views on each side of the saddle, but I don’t think it fully captured how cool and impressive it was. The section from there to Methow Pass was so incredible - the mountains were amazing in all directions, there were bowls of trees as far as I could see, and it was all so beautiful. I stopped for the night just the other side of that pass, and was relieved to find another tent where I’d planned to camp which turned out to be Matt from Stehekin. I’d seen a snake in the morning which I wasn’t expecting and didn’t fancy seeing any more wildlife alone, and I’d also passed a weird guy earlier who freaked me out a bit when I knew that the manhunt for the serial killer was still going on.

🇺🇸 Day 86 - 10km - 15.08.25 ⛰️ I was very pleased with my tent positioning in the trees because even though it rained in the night, I barely got wet. Weirdly it was dry in the morning, but because I’d expected it to be raining I’d done some big pushes the last few days to make sure I only had to do an hour or two today into Stehekin - which ended up maybe being my favourite resupply town of the whole trail. I was so weary every mound felt like a mountain, but it was mostly downhill and I met Pixie with only a few k to go who was so great. Stehekin is a cool little town at the far end of Lake Chelan - only accessible to the outside world by a 5 hour ferry, float-plane, or by hiking at least 30k down the PCT and then taking a shuttle from the trailhead down an 11 mile dirt road. There are only 4 buses a day which had been causing me some logistical stress, and we’d been so anxious about missing the 9am one that we’d both got up so early we were there by 7:30am, so I droned over the Stehekin river whilst we waited. The shuttle stopped at the most incredible bakery on the way in, and I had the biggest creamy cinnamon bun I’ve ever seen which was so amazing. We were desperate for a room as it was going to pour with rain that afternoon and evening, and although we knew we for sure we weren’t going to be pitching our tents, we weren’t quite sure how that would materialise. We were so lucky that although the lodge was fully booked, there was a man trying to get rid of a room he’d paid for but didn’t need that we managed to get. We couldn’t check in for a while but it was such a relief, and in the meantime we picked up our boxes, chatted to a lovely day hiker couple on the balcony, and enjoyed the beautiful view of the lake. It’s hard to know exactly how it was suddenly 5pm, but as we were waiting for dinner we made some Kodiak protein balls with powder and almond butter we found in the hiker box, in a silver metal dish thing we pilfered from the kitchen, and with some honey we managed to get for free from the gift shop. I had a huckleberry seltzer with dinner and we all chilled on the terrace chatting until it was time for bed.

🇺🇸 Day 85 - 62km - 14.08.25 ⛰️ I woke up in a cloud, but was so happy it wasn’t raining. The first few k were up and along the mountain top, which I definitely didn’t appreciate enough before the entire rest of the day was in the forest. On the descent down I ate loads of salmon berries, and after crossing the river it was a long slog up and over Suiattle Pass which ended up being a vk. The sun did come out but I couldn’t really tell for the trees, but it did get really hot so I jumped in Miners Creek on the way up. There were glimmers of a good view once I started coming down, so I decided to pop the drone up to see it properly. I was so exhausted and although the trail was pretty overgrown, it was mostly me being tired that meant I kept cutting my legs climbing over blowdowns. Some of the trees were so massive though that it was actually quite cool to see them, and this time it was more fun than the tediousness of NorCal. I powered on down the valley and had another quick dip in Swamp Creek before finding somewhere to camp sheltered in the trees at Pass Creek once it got too dark to keep going.

🇺🇸 Day 84 - 58km - 13.08.25 ⛰️ The mornings views of the surrounding mountains and landscape were really beautiful, and after a couple of hours I came across a lovely guy who’d just climbed Glacier Peak and gave me a mint Cliff bar when I said it was my favourite flavour. The views continued up to the next summit, but then once I crossed the saddle, the descent was long and pretty barron, and the forest at the bottom was where jungle gym over blowdowns started. Weirdly there were also quite a lot of supersonic jets going overhead which was quite discombobulating being in the wilderness and completely in the middle of nowhere. After Kennedy Creek the trail got a bit worse as the first massive climb of the day started - mostly because the trail slanted and was eroded away down the mountain. I caught up to my Australian friend from the last water source at Fire Creek and he said he’d just seen a black bear. Then we did the last 3k together up to the top of Fire Creek Pass, but the grey clouds were rolling in and it was pretty windswept so we carried on to Mica Lake. I’d planned to drone there, and Alex was going to show me some features I didn’t even know existed, but it was far too cold and windy so we carried on descending. I kept on going down to Milk Creek and then all the way back up the other side. I wasn’t quite sure which the bad section was supposed to be, or really quite why, but I wanted to get all of it over with incase it was raining and slippy tomorrow. It was all pretty over grown and there were lots of things to climb over, but it was more tedious than dangerous, and mostly just because of how steep it was.

🇺🇸 Day 83 - 63km - 12.08.25 ⛰️ I was pleasantly suprised I made it out of camp by 6am and it was only an hour or two into Stevens Pass. Another guy who’d camped at the lake hiked out with me in the morning, but he was quite annoying so I managed to shake him about half way. I made it to the ski centre before 9am to pick up my special surprise resupply package, which was actually a lovely treat I’d been looking forward to. There were tortillas and half a jar of peanut butter in the hiker box which I’d been wanting for ages so that became my second breakfast whilst I got everything done. I knew I had to be speedy, but still had time for an ice cream on my way out as I started off on the next section of trail. I was pleasantly surprised all day how well maintained and clear the trail was, and although there were hills they weren’t too steep. I didn’t seem to take loads of photos but it was actually really nice. I droned at the top of Grizzly peak - apparently it’s rare that the PCT passes over the top of a mountain peak - but tbh from there the views weren’t quite as good as from other parts of the rest of the day. Lake Valhalla was beautiful early doors, and then Pear Lake was also stunning where I had to stop to get water - although I hadn’t realised it was a bit of a way down from the main path. At the start of the day I’d set myself the target of getting to Lake Sally Ann to camp, and somehow - although it was quite far and I done a resupply, I knew I could still make it if I tried hard. I was actually quite proud of myself for making it there before it got too dark by jogging some of the downhills in the last part, and made it just in the nick of time.

🇺🇸 Day 82 - 55km - 11.08.25 ⛰️ I felt a bit better when I woke up but was still grateful for the bag of Tylenol a lovely girl gave me down at the Waptus river. Today I didn’t mind that the trail was in the forest again because it was so hot and I thought the shade would help stop my headache coming back. There was a nice meadow at the bottom of the first big climb, and the saddle at the top where I ended up having quite a long rest had semi good views on either side. Deception Lake half way up the next big climb was really pretty, but there were loads of mosquitos so I carried on up to the top of Piper Pass where I decided to drone. There was a super steep section up Traps Pass, but a kind man gave me some Ritz sandwich crackers at the top before my 7k decent in to Mig Lake where I camped for the night.

🇺🇸 Day 81 - 54km - 10.08.25 ⛰️ The restaurant opened at 7am and I was there bang on the dot for a pancake and omelette breakfast. I swung past the shop to pick up a sandwich for lunch before heading up Kendall Katwalk for the big climb out of Snoqualmie. It was a highway of trail runners who I was slightly envious of, but at the top Ridge Lake was beautiful, and then there was an incredible traverse along the mountain edge with amazing views over the surrounding region, including Joe Lake. The trail was rocky, steep and quite technical so it was pretty slow going but I enjoyed the scenery, and the day was definitely front loaded in terms of views. It was a brutally hot day and most of the trail was exposed, so it was a massive relief to jump into the water at Delate Waterfall before the second big climb of the day. My headache got worse throughout the evening, so I camped halfway down the mountain with a view of Waptus Lake, and went to sleep as soon as possible.

🇺🇸 Day 80 - 50km - 09.08.25 ⛰️ My tent was drenched in condensation when woke up so I strapped it draped to the outside of my bag to dry, and spent the first part of the day looking like a parachutist. The day was pretty much all in the forest, but there were also some super steep climbs which were challenging as today I was just completely exhausted. I ate lots of salmon berries, but was very excited to come across some trail magic in the afternoon, and enjoyed sweets and peanut butter crackers at Twilight Lake. I droned at Mirror Lake which had lots of day hikers as it was very pretty. Then I realised I’d gone a bit wrong adding unnecessary elevation, and had a moment before just grizzing it out down the hill into Snoqualmie. It was already 7pm by the time I got there and I needed to resupply, but luckily the hotel there had space. I was so tired, and after almost a month of no Wi-Fi I desperately needed to plug in my phone overnight to back it up, so I just crashed there for the night. I think I’d had something edible that didn’t make me feel great, so I just went to sleep as soon as I’d got everything done that I had to.

🇺🇸 Day 79 - 63km - 08.08.25 ⛰️ It was a relief to wake up to blue skies and great to be back in sunglasses. I still put on all my clothes because I just couldn’t face being cold anymore, but was totally happy to have to stop at the top of the first climb to de-layer. The views were amazing and it was warm, dry and still enough to sit down, so it was fab to get the drone out again. There was one big mountain near me but I couldn’t work out what it was called, and I think it was Mt Adams that I could see in the distance. For most of the morning I was high up traversing mountains and ridge lines which was really pretty, then I entered a bit of a burn forest and finally a bit of a forest forest, but all in all the days views finally delivered more of what I’d come to expect from the PCT. I passed a couple with hand guns strapped to their chests which was a bit disconcerting, but also came across a lovely couple in a cool Jeep Wrangler who gave me a massive bag of Ritz crackers and cheese which was lovely, and a couple with a cool huckleberry picker device. It was a long stretch to the last water source where I’d been planning to camp, and I assumed there would be other people there. I was surprised that there wasn’t and didn’t really feel like camping in the forest by myself, so pushed on to the dirt road below where it was a bit more open, even though it was already dark. Then I had a nightmare situation after dinner, as I was minding my own business and suddenly realised I’d left my netting unzipped enough that a mouse had got into my tent, and then it was a horrible experience to try and catch it and get it out.

🇺🇸 Day 78 - 52km - 07.08.25 ⛰️ It took a while to repack everything into my bag before I headed down for a hot breakfast burrito from the shop and treated myself to a new bottle of water. Today was overcast and cold but crucially dry, which is a combination I was totally happy to work with. Apart from a few lakes the trail was pretty boring and covered, and the highlight was the ginormous rice krispie cake that was my lunch. I also passed someone with a full medieval sword which was weird, and I’m sure I saw a bear footprint in the mud. As the day progressed it did get better - Big Dewey Lake was pretty and felt like a turning point in terms of views and bluer skies. After the following climb there was a great view down and across the next valley - which weirdly coincided with quite a lot of day hikers, even though it was quite late in the evening. I carried on up to Sheep Lake to camp which was very windy, so I made a barricade out of old logs to try and stop the worst of the draft from getting into my tent.

🇺🇸 Day 77 - 46km - 06.08.25 ⛰️ Right on cue it started raining at 2:30am just as the weather forecast had predicted, and today was my first full day of proper wet rain. I could have pitched my tent better to be more sheltered by trees although in the end it wouldn’t have mattered, but I was pleasantly surprised it managed to keep me and all my stuff dry during the night. I tried to waterproof everything in plastic bags before setting off, in a way was glad it justified me having carried my waterproof trousers all this time, and was very grateful for my petrol station plastic gloves. I started by heading up Cispus Pass which wasn’t too bad, and then entered Goat Rocks wilderness. Almost the most annoying thing (in hindsight) was that I think this section is meant to be one of the most beautiful, and I had zero visibility and the most I could see was 2m in front of me. I did make sure to enjoy the wildflowers lining the trail though, because really that’s all I could see. I was nervous about the next section which was at even higher altitude, and because the two people I’d passed coming the other way sequentially described it as ‘dangerous’ and ‘shit’. I knew there were three sketchy ice traverses, and then a long exposed stretch called ‘knife-edge’, and if there was ever a section not to do in slippy rain and howling wind it was this. But in a way not being able to see the drop off maybe helped, because the consequences of falling would have been bad, and slowly but surely I made it across and soon enough was down on the other side and out of the worst of the wind. I got as wet from the inside out as the outside in so couldn’t really stop - not that I wanted to - because I just got too cold. I braved risking the lightning port to take a photo at what was apparently a view of Mt Rainier, as my second bump over 2000 m wasn’t nearly as bad as the first, and then just raced down as fast as I could to get it over with. And so I left Goat Rocks none the wiser as to what it actually looks like, and today was the day where if you squinted hard enough it looked a bit like Wales. (Continued in comments)

🇺🇸 Day 76 - 60km - 05.08.25 ⛰️ I had a lovely chat with the couple camped next to me over breakfast, and then started to climb up towards Mt Adams. It was a burn zone, but the benefit was that I could see the sky and the horizon which was nice after a few days of dark covered forest, and it was also blue skies and sunny today which was a treat after two days of cloud. At the top of the trail where it started to skirt the mountain was an amazing viewpoint so I stopped to drone. There were a few meadows with pretty wildflowers and waterfalls so it was all very picturesque, and I could also see another mountain in the distance too. Around lunchtime the trail started to descend, and from then onwards it was foresty again, although there were a couple of lakes too. There were flirtations of mosquitos, but as I climbed up again they disappeared, and I got a great view of the valley below on my way to find somewhere to camp.

🇺🇸 Day 75 - 61km - 04.08.25 ⛰️ Today was somehow even more just in a forest than yesterday, with even less views. I started by climbing up onto what could maybe have been a ridge-line, but I was so in a cloud that I had no visibility. It was wet from the cloud without really raining, and also really windy and cold. I held out putting my waterproof on as long as possible, but eventually gave in and then had to put my fleece on too. But as I came down and got lower it did get a bit warmer, and by the time I got to Mosquito Creek I reckoned I could even have a shower in the stream. Then I found a couple in a car who took my rubbish and gave me handfuls of nuts, and I decided to drone in the forest just to spice things up. After crashing into my third tree I decided to call it a day and keep going. The map told me I was camping somewhere near the foot of Mt Adams, which I do think I caught glimpses of through the now dead trees.

🇺🇸 Day 74 - 59km - 03.08.25 ⛰️ I woke up in a cloud and in a forest, and didn’t leave forest for the entire rest of the day. I only had one or two glimpses of the outside world at all, and the lack of views wasn’t helped by the fact I was acutely reacquainted with long and steep climbs - with what turned into a pretty hilly day. The new addition to the wildlife scene was loads of ginormous fat slugs. I found some bush snacks at Panther Creek and smashed an entire ziplock bag of Bombay mix before an invigorating dip in the stream. I could still see Mt Hood from the top of the last climb - my second vk in two days, but I think perhaps also a new mountain too. I camped in more wood near two lovely people it was nice to chat to as I set up my tent.

🇺🇸 Day 73 - 51km - 02.08.25 🌲 I jogged down the east fork of Eagle Creek, and once I hit the main river there started to be really beautiful waterfalls. Tunnel Falls was the highlight and you can also walk behind it which was cool. I decided to brave droning which was prison defence flying, as there were so many trees around and I kept losing sight of it. I passed loads of day hikers on the way down to the road, and then found some bush crisps to supplement all the blackberries that helped me make it into Cascade Locks. I took over the lobby at the Best Western for my resupply, and headed out for ice cream and food around what turned out to be very unintuitive and time-consuming laundry. The town has some kind of affiliation to salmon so I had chowder on ciabatta at Brighams Fish Market on a recommendation which was delicious. And so with a noticeably heavier bag it was time to cross the Bridge of the Gods and the Columbia River, leaving Oregon and entering Washington. The Oregon PCT is 735km long, and I did it in 793km and 6 ice cream, so combined with California I’ve hiked the official 3460km in 3731km and 32 ice cream. The rest of the day was pretty much all uphill, including a vk at the end with a big water carry. An old man also kindly gave me some electrolytes because I couldn’t find any in Cascade Locks. I was rewarded with beautiful views from the top, including of Mt Hood and where I was yesterday in the distance, and the river I’d just crossed down below.

🇺🇸 Day 72 - 57km - 01.08.25 🌲 I had been looking forward to the supposedly iconic Timberland lodge buffet breakfast, but it overpromised and undelivered and was just a normal buffet breakfast that didn’t even start until 8am, but great nonetheless - mostly as I got it for free. The trail continued around Mt Hood and then went down it. I droned at what I thought was its last view point, but it’s so big I could of course still see it from many different angles by the evening. I’d been tired all day from not enough sleep and a bit of a come down from the excitement of yesterday, so didn’t even have a first wind until about 6pm when my breakfast pancakes and waffles finally dripped through to my legs. Then I learnt what salmon berries are - like orange blackberries, and confirmed what thimble berries are - like mutated raspberries. With blueberries the calories to time ratio means they aren’t really worth picking unless you grab a branch and graze as you go, but salmon berries are much more fruitful, and of course I love salmon but also they taste like berries. My trail intel had suggested it was best to camp at Wahtum lake, which turned out to be true as it was really pretty, and when I got there I even had time for a quick dip before bed.

🇺🇸 Day 71 - 54km - 31.07.25 🌲 I stumbled across some trail magic in the morning, so enjoyed some brioche eggy toast and hot coffee. Then it rained again, but I was mostly in the trees and it was pretty flat going alongside Timothy Lake where I learnt what huckleberries are - they basically look and taste like blueberries but in a slightly taller bush. Little Crater Lake was actually very cool and definitely better seen from above so I popped up the drone. In the afternoon I could start to see glimmers of Mount Hood through the trees, but I didn’t mind that the days views were pretty average because I was excited to see Tony and his family at Timberline Lodge that evening. That motivated me up the mountain, especially the last few k on sand dunes and before I knew it I was there. It was such a lovely treat, great to meet them, the best dinner on trail so far, and an expertly fixed pole was an added bonus! Then I managed to accidentally get lost into the guest only section of the hotel and sneak a hot shower by the pool, before retreating to camp 100m away at the top of the hill.

🇺🇸 Day 70 - 60km - 30.07.25 🌲 It was an overcast start the day and technically rained a bit in the morning as the path went uphill and skirted around Mt Jefferson. It was pretty mountainous, barren and snowy, especially in the bad weather and the rocks made the trail slow going. On the way down I droned at the aptly named Many Lake Viewpoint, and then stopped to buy lunch snacks at Ollalie lake which was really pretty. It’s been quite nice recently crossing paths with SOBO people, as it seems a bit more sociable. After lunch the sun came out, it was back to blue skies, and it got really hot, but there were no real views for the rest of the day. The whole 30k of trail in the afternoon though was almost entirely lined with blueberry bushes which was cool, but I mostly just pushed on to get to the water source before dark. The guy already camped where I stopped to set up my tent fully thought I was a bear as he’d had one at his campsite the night before - which scared both of us in equal measure.

🇺🇸 Day 69 - 56km - 29.07.25 🌲 I didn’t sleep in as long as I wanted, but managed to sort my stuff out before the free breakfast - what else other than pancakes and waffles, although the token fruit was a nice touch. Less than 2k into hiking there was some trail magic and although I really didn’t need more pancakes, this time there was peanut butter too. Then I weirdly found some doughnuts on a signpost and had so much energy I didn’t need any more snacks for whole rest of day except for my pre-drone concentration snack. I motored on to make the most of starting out late, and could see grey clouds and hear thunder over the mountains behind me so kept my eyes forward and only stopped to drone when there was the best view of Mount Jefferson. I thought it was a good chance to sit down for 5 minutes, but the mosquitos made sure that wasn’t the case. It had been so hot and humid it was such a relief to make it to cold stream, where I washed and grabbed water before powering up to a pond to camp. Not that I was hallucinating, but I hundred percent convinced myself a rock was a dead deer on the way.

🇺🇸 Day 68 - 58km - 28.07.25 🌲 I quickly entered a volcanic area which was totally different to the rest of Oregon so far. There were big snowy mountains behind me potentially called Three Sisters, beautiful purple red and yellow wild flowers in all the meadows, and literally thousands of Californian tortoiseshell butterflies all around me. Obsidian waterfall was pretty cool, and I stopped for water at South Matthieu lake where I met a lovely old couple to chat to. As I was drying my tent and sleeping bag at the road where it was flat, a guy hitching into town gave me all his snacks - I must have looked very disheveled. Then the path turned into loose rock boulders and became tougher going, but I pushed on the heat up the big hill. Down hill was somehow worse through what felt like the forest of destruction from last year’s fires. I made it to Big Lake Youth Camp in good time, and a shower and clothes wash was amazing. I made a hummus sandwich for dinner and then discovered the great hack that you can make yummy pancakes in the microwave.
